New Orleans Sweet Side, Pecans, Chocolates, Dessert

New Orleans summer sweets from Sucré

There’s more to New Orleans cuisine than poboys, jambalaya and gumbo. New Orleans has a sweet side, and I’m not talking about beignets or sweet tea. I’ve always been a chocolate lover, but thanks to Sucré, a New Orleans-based gourmet dessert and artisan confection boutique, I’ve become a pecan lover.

I have yet to travel to New Orleans, Louisiana, but I have visited the Mississippi Gulf Coast, tasted southern cooking and experienced southern hospitality. Recently, I was in Huntsville, Alabama and had a moon pie in honor of my visit to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Pecan lovers

Nut lovers unite. If you like pecans, try the pecan lovers package with southern pecan macaroons, Magnolia chocolates, candied southern pecans and a caramelized pecan loaf. $57.

New Orleans summer chocolates

As I said, I’m a chocolate lover. I may be out of fashion, but I prefer milk chocolate over dark. Being a California girl, I was raised on See’s Candies – still my personal favorite. However, Sucré’s summer collection of rose petal ganache in milk chocolate, raspberry blended with dark chocolate, and milk chocolate infused with lemon are making my taste buds do the happy dance. I think it’s a good thing that I don’t live near these New Orleans sweet shops.

If you like macaroons, try the lemon buttercream with blackberry jam center infused with balsamic & cassis or the vanilla buttercream with southern peach marmalade. These macaroons are show stoppers for the ultimate summer picnic – the packaging is cute, too.

Handmade marshmallows from Sucré

For me, summer time means camping, picnics and backyard parties. Who doesn’t love a good s’more? What’s better than gooey milk chocolate melting over a soft marshmallow, sandwiched between two graham crackers?  This Fourth of July I decided to up the ante and swap a handmade Sucré marshmallow for the stale store bought kind. Not only do these Tahitian dreams melt in your mouth, the pink and white colored marshmallows dressed up my dessert tray.

Insider tip

No plans for a trip to New Orleans? No problem. Sucré ships their sinful sweets worldwide year round. My summertime gift box arrived safe and sound during a California heat wave. The strawberry amaretti crunch bar was as fresh as a bowl of summer berries.
