Formerly known as THEhotel at Mandalay Bay, Delano Las Vegas was renovated and rebranded in September of 2014. Unlike its formal predecessor, Delano is more hip and inviting, yet embraces a desert modernism sense of style. When guests walk into the inviting lobby, they literally are invited into the hotel. While much less obtrusive than a Walmart greeter, you will be welcomed to the 43-story tower with a warm smile upon arrival. Service is the watchword in this Mojave Desert inspired property.
Observant guests will appreciate the subtle nature theme prevalent throughout the hotel. From the massive split boulders near the entrance (weighing in at over 90,000 pounds, maybe it’s not too subtle) to the earth-toned colors of the Colorado River flowing through a swath of expansive carpet by the lobby, the arid desert makes its presence known.
Artist Jaehyo Lee brings the natural beauty front and center with his display of suspended stone on the lobby floor. The all-suite property features a neutral and white color scheme, interrupted by one bold, black and white provocative underwater photo by George Kyriakos,a nod to the Delano South Beach namesake.
Spa and gym
Bathhouse spa, with its tall, dark walls and rain water block reminds me of swimming in caves. There are hot and cold square plunge pools and a larger, rectangular pool that was large enough for me to swim in – although that was probably not the designer’s intent. There are the expected steam rooms and saunas, along with 12 treatment rooms, but the hot stone massage is what will bring me back to Delano Las Vegas. The desert stone massage ($175. for 50 minutes mid-week, $185 Friday and Saturday, includes an aromatherapy massage with oils of desert sage and lemon blossom. There is also a Bathhouse gym with a complete workout space.
Nibbles and bits
Cocktails and small bites are available nightly at Franklin, while breakfast is offered at 3940 Coffee + Tea and the farm-to-table Della’s Kitchen. Don’t miss the red velvet pancakes with cocoa nibs and cream cheese glaze if they make an appearance on Della’s menu.
Room rates
My king suite #23801, measured in at 725 square feet, looked onto the Las Vegas strip and rented for $139 mid-week in February. Depending on the season, rates increase with size and view. You’ll want to request odd-numbered rooms above the 22nd floor to avoid peering into the Luxor.
Give a dog a bone
For those of us unable to separate from our pets, fear not; Delano is pet-friendly. Some dogs are picky eaters. I have a Labrador Retriever, so I do not understand that concept. However, if you have a finicky eating four-legged friend, the Delano has your back. Not only does the hotel offer an entire pet-friendly floor, they offer a dog menu featuring a Wagyu beef burger for your pooch. Yes, you read that right. Heck, they’ll even walk your dog and text you a photo for a fee. Now that’s better than a nanny cam. Pet-fee $50 per night, 50 pound weight limit. Labrador Retrievers need not apply.
