Bairro Alto Hotel, Historic Downtown Lisbon, Portugal Location

Bairro Alto hotel in Lisbon’s bohemian district

Like the captains of ships sailing the waters of Portugal many years ago, we know that location is important for trading goods. The same rules apply for today’s traveler; location is everything.  The five star Bairro Alto Hotel is ideally situated in the heart of historic downtown Lisbon, Portugal. Open the hotel front door and guests are steps from the chic Chiado city center or bohemian Bairro Alto district of Lisbon.

Bairro Alto is for the birds

B is for birds at Bairro Alto hotel, Lisbon, Portugal

Bird lovers will see that each room has a different bird, hand painted, on the hotel wall. From my random Facebook poll, we think the bird featured in my room is a Finch.

My understanding is that the Bairro Alto district was once home to an abundance of birds. There are four color schemes in the bedrooms of Bairro Alto Hotel; red represents the wine of Portugal, white represents the Portuguese floors, blue represents the Tajo River in Lisbon and yellow represents the cheerful tram cars seen around the city.

Bairro Alto Hotel

The 55 room, boutique hotel opened in May of 2005. With single rooms, superior rooms, twin rooms, deluxe rooms and suites, there is lodging to fit every traveler’s needs. All rooms are non-smoking and come equipped with DVD, cable television, iStation, air conditioning, safe, minibar, cable and wifi (extra charge), as well as a pillow menu, bathrobes, flipflops (to take home with you) and Miller Harris shampoo, shower gel and body lotion.

The hotel offers a business center, massage room (advance reservations required), fitness center and parking.

I loved the monogrammed, fluffy white bath towels; perhaps that’s because the Bairro Alto Hotel and I share the same “B” initial?  Believe me when I say that I thought about stuffing one of their towels in my suitcase. I also loved the marble used throughout the bathroom. Families take note that some rooms, such as mine, offer adjoining rooms.

  1. This looks beautiful! Will try to check this one out when we come to visit Portugal soon. Thanks for the nice share!

  2. The staff here are extremely helpful. You get a gold star from me. I had a group tour with Hewlett Packard a while ago who were having a private dinner nearby when the top lady had to contact head office urgently to send a fax. I walked her round to the Bairro Alto Hotel where they graciously helped her out. She will definately think of the hotel the next time she visits Lisbon,
