Vacationing on the Cape and Islands of Massachusetts in the summer can be expensive, but few people realize that the off-season, especially the spring and fall, can be lovely and inexpensive. We’ve visited the islands in May and Cape Cod in the fall, and found them to be uncrowded and fun. Here are a few ways to enjoy these summer hotspots this spring and fall.
Martha’s Vineyard
Many of the hotels on the Vineyard offer great rates in the off season, even the posh Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown. If you are looking for an in-room kitchen in a fabulous location, the no-frills Edgartown Commons is perfect. Or, rent a vacation home which is much easier to do in the off season where there is often no minimum stay requirement. Spring festivals include the Martha’s Vineyard Wine Festival in May and the Taste of the Vineyard in June.
Nantucket
The popular Nantucket Island Resorts hotels offer a Cool Dates, Hot Deals promotion where guests can get a fabulous deal on lodging in the spring or fall. There are also several fun festivals in the spring, including the Daffodil Festival in April and the Nantucket Wine Festival in May. My favorite of the hotels is the luxurious White Elephant Hotel, located right downtown.
Cape Cod
The kid-friendly Ocean Edge Resort is offering a great spring break deal for families, including lots of fun activities. Last fall, we really enjoyed a stay at the Sea Crest Beach Hotel in Falmouth, which offers beach-front access, an indoor pool, and an outdoor pool.
