What a long, strange trip it’s been! Like a train emerging out of a deep, dark tunnel, Rocky Mountaineer is returning to the rails this July, 2021 after a forced shutdown. This Canadian train journey is one of my personal favorite adventures in Western Canada. I can’t wait to get back on board.
Canadian train journey
As I live in the United States, my Canadian train journey starts in Vancouver, British Columbia. I recommend arriving to the city of glass a day or two before your scheduled train departure, as there are plenty of things to see and do in Vancouver.
While Canada has not yet opened its borders to other parts of the world, Canadian residents living in Canada are able to experience Rocky Mountaineer’s luxury train travel beginning early July, 2021. I’ve been fortunate to experience Rocky Mountaineer’s GoldLeaf train travel on multiple occasions. The Canadian-based company offers 4 rail routes through the Western Canada Rockies.

Perhaps because the First Passage to the West itinerary was my first luxury train journey it has become my favorite. As I am an active adventure baby boomer, asking me to select my favorite rail route would be like asking me to pick a favorite child or grandchild – each one has its on unique personality. The Journey Through the Clouds route is another winner if you have yet to visit Jasper National Park. One thing I can guarantee about a Rocky Mountaineer Canadian train journey is that you will be able to sit back and relax while traveling through breathtaking scenery. And after the last year or more that we’ve all endured, I think we all deserve to be pampered on our next holiday.
While the Rocky Mountaineer will operate on a reduced schedule in July as they ramp up to a full August schedule, they will not be reducing their food and beverage service. Dining on a luxury train is one of life’s memorable treasures. After almost two years of not dining out in restaurants, I for one am now enjoying restaurant quality meals in beautiful locations.
Train journeys are safe options for travel and what better way to enjoy the scenery than with GoldLeaf Service eating off of fine china? I have missed the fresh baked scones served first thing after boarding the train. Of course, lunch service is one of the highlights, as it is served in the dining car on the first floor (if you have selected GoldLeaf Service.) I love the Canadian salmon and the fresh baked desserts served onboard Rocky Mountaineer! In the afternoon, cheese and crackers are served, along with local Canadian wines from the Okanagan Valley.

No matter the route you select, the Rocky Mountaineer train experience will be one for the memory books. From being serenaded by a Scottish bagpiper while you wait to embark on your Canadian train journey, meeting new friends in the glass-dome train coaches or in the outdoor viewing area, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the ride.
I have not traveled with Rocky Mountaineer since the pandemic, but I’ve been told that the team will follow strict health and safety protocols. Additionally, all third-party hotel partners have implemented health and safety procedures in accordance with the Canadian government, including stringent cleaning procedures. I’m excited to travel once again with Rocky Mountaineer and I hope you are too.
