Looking for a great adults-only getaway? Love Frank Sinatra? Well, I’ve got the perfect place for you. Head to Palm Springs and the newly remodeled Del Marcos Hotel – a beautiful gem built in 1947 by the famed architect William F. Cody. My husband and I have stayed here twice now, and each time become more enchanted with its mid-century modern architecture and vintage furniture. Trust me – after a few minutes there you’ll swear ol’ Blue Eyes is going to walk through the lobby with a cocktail singing, “Luck Be A Lady.” Which would be perfect, since the music throughout the hotel is retro, too – no blasting boomboxes allowed.
A Grownup Getaway
The Del Marcos is adults-only, which was fine with us since we opted to leave our teenagers at home with a wad of cash and strict orders not have a party or set anything on fire. (The manager did inform us however, that they will be having a couple of ‘Family Weekends’ in the fall, so if you’re interested in bringing the kids call for more information.)
This Time It’s Personal
We are so impressed with everything about this hotel – its small size (only 17 rooms), the attention to detail (authentic 50’s mosaics on the walls), its location nestled against the San Jacinto Mountains, the beach cruisers that you can borrow for free to take a spin around town. We also loved the fact that the ‘front desk’ consists of one person sitting behind a vintage table. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming – you’ll have a truly personal experience that you won’t get at a big hotel chain.
Creature Comforts
We rented the suite upstairs, which we had lusted over during our last stay and which fortunately was available this time around. It was perfect – a private deck with loungers and a table that overlooked the pool, and an (almost) full kitchen – the only thing missing was a stove, but it came equipped with a full-size refrigerator, sink, coffee maker and microwave, and the cupboards were stocked with cups, dishes and flatware. It was like being at home, but much more relaxing and awesome.
Lots To Do-Be-Do-Be-Do
The Del Marcos is walking distance from Palm Canyon Road in the historic Palm Springs hotel and shopping district where there’s lots of great restaurants and boutiques. We recommend The Falls, a steak and seafood restaurant famous for their ‘smoking martinis’ (we thought ‘smoking’ just meant extremely good, but they really do smoke!) But if steak isn’t your thing, there is pretty much every kind of restaurant you can imagine within walking distance of the hotel.
If you’re planning a romantic getaway, a girls weekend or just a gathering of friends, I suggest you give the Del Marcos a try. We’ll definitely be going back – this time with friends – and we plan on staying longer and taking advantage of the DIY barbecue and poolside bar. I want to have a pitcher of martinis ready in case the Rat Pack stops by.
