I got an offer I couldn’t refuse. Extra-long Fourth of July weekend on Lake Tahoe with my posse.
So here I am with my feet up, a warm breeze flowing through the open door to the deck, snowcapped (YES, snow in July) mountains in the distance, and the sapphire blue lake peeking out through redwoods, sugar pines, and white fir trees.
Since three of the friends are dog owners, finding a place that was big enough (at present there are eight one more is on the way) and that allowed dogs was the challenge.
Through VRBO, my friend Angela found Buck Haus, represented by Tahoe Moon Properties.
The living area of 3160 Meadowbrook Drive has vaulted, cathedral ceilings and a wall of windows looking out on the treetops, mountains, and lake, and filling the upstairs rooms with natural light.
Off the living area is a large sunny deck, patio furniture, BBQ, and hot tub — great for summertime entertaining.
We’re less than a mile from Lake Forest Beach, which is dog friendly and has a smattering of picnic tables.
Now for the downside of this particular property ☹
Since we brought tons of food and a male friend who promised to cook for all of the ladies and children in the crew (like I mentioned, an offer I couldn’t refuse….), the kitchen is quite important.
But, unfortunately, the only appliances that work well are the Oster blender, the Cuisinart coffee machine and the very vintage but stalwart Maytag washer and dryer.
As for the rest… the oven doesn’t come up to temperature, the dishwasher doesn’t get hot enough to clean or dry dishes properly. The refrigerator is ancient and dirty and the door doesn’t close completely and the property wasn’t stocked with enough paper towels, toilet paper, or garbage bags. Last bitch — there is no soap in the bathrooms and the smoke detector doesn’t work. Yikes.
Anyway, it’s lovely and relaxing and filled with good friends and we have an on-site chef. It’s hard to complain about anything, really. But as an Airbnb owner, those are some significant issues that should be addressed, and certainly, when you are charging $450 per night.
