Fort Wakefield Carriage House in Sisters, Oregon

Looking for an affordable place to stay in Sisters, Oregon with a historic past? The Fort Wakefield has been around since 1929. If only these walls could talk.

Historic Fort Wakefield with 4 steps to the front porch. The 1929 building is white with a set of glass windows flanking the wood and glass front door. Four wood rocking chairs are on the front porch and an American flag hangs front the flag pole on the front on the building.

Located in Central Oregon’s Deschutes County, the high desert city of Sisters has an 1880’s Western facade, yet plenty of culture abounds. Business owners and artists take care to guard the Historic Preservation of the town. The same holds true for The Fort Wakefield, an historic landmark in downtown Sisters, Oregon.

Fort Wakefield Carriage House B. The renovated, one-story white garage has a set of 3 black-trimmed windows to the left of front glass door. To the right of the front door is another vertical window. Four wicker and metal chairs are on the small patio walkway. White lights hang from the rooftop.

With two attached cottages available for rent, The Fort Wakefield offers Carriage House A and Carriage House B. My husband and I stayed in Carriage House B with a king bed and queen sofa sleeper. This studio works well for a Central Oregon couples getaway or 2 adults and 2 children.

King bed with black wrought iron frame. Small wood table on either side of bed holds lamp. A faux laurel wreath hangs above the bed. White bedding with 4 pillows and one, square black accent pillow. Laminate plank wood flooring. Two windows, with cloth curtains left of bed.

Carriage House layout

The studio layout includes a king bed to the left of the front door and a portable coat rack. Beyond is an ADA bathroom with walk in shower. A hairdryer hangs on one of the towel hooks.

A queen sofa bed is in the cottage living room area, along with a rectangular wood coffee table. A flat screen smart TV is located on the wall between the living room and king bed.

Ours was a winter stay so we didn’t hang out on the small patio or take advantage of the gas firepit in front of the carriage house units.

Carriage house layout includes gray, cloth queen sofa bed. Wood end tables on either side. A circular metal black star design hangs above the sofa. Rectangular wood table with white legs is centered on a gray and white square area rug. To the left of sofa is a faux fig leaf plant and a square window with cloth curtain.

Carriage House kitchenette

Breakfast is not included with your stay. However, there is a kitchenette with coffee station, mini fridge, microwave oven and sink. The Keurig coffee maker had Kirkland coffee pods. No tea or tea kettle was available.

There is a small, high top table with 2 chairs if you opt to dine in. With so many dining options in downtown Sisters, I would opt to go out. We enjoyed High Camp Taphouse, The Open Door and, our favorite, Sisters Bakery.

There was a coupon for a Buy One Get One Free from next door neighbor Suttle Tea, as well as a small discount for a local breakfast cafe.

The owner of Suttle Tea mentioned that The Wakefield House has had many lives, with the current owners making thoughtful improvements over time. With its 1929 historic landmark status, I would have loved to have seen some framed pictures from back in the day on display in the cottage. As mentioned, I’m sure this former carriage house has many stories to share if these walls could talk.

Kitchenette with white countertop, small rectangular sink with black faucet. Above sink is a shelf with 8 water glasses, 5 black ceramic coffee mugs and 5 stacked Keurig coffee pods. On the counter is a black Keurig coffee maker. Below the shelf sits a black mini fridge with a small microwave oven resting on top of fridge. A wood framed piece of art features a sailboat. A metal frame holds three wicker baskets on the floor, holding a small faux snake plant and basket of faux lemons.

Currently the owners offer the Carriage House studios on Air BnB or VRBO. You may also go directly to the Fort Wakefield website to book your stay. Rates at The Fort Wakefield Carriage House start at $120 per night. The suites are not pet-friendly. If you are looking for a pet-friendly hotel in Central Oregon, try the Campfire Hotel in Bend.
