Pair fall foliage fun with perfect lodging–Ohio style

Getting a boots from Ohio ATV World guide

October in the Hocking Hills region of Ohio is the perfect time for fall foliage fun. The sugar maple leaves have turned brilliant red and orange and the aspens are a bright yellow. Along with hiking the miles of trails in the Wayne National Forest and Hocking Hills State Park, there are several options for taking in the beauty. Thanks to area attractions that capitalize on the leaf-peeping bounty, fall fun abounds. Each of the following can be enjoyed in a two-day adventure.

Don’t miss, and worth the price, thrills are found at the Hocking Hills Canopy Tours. Here, you’ll zip along eleven stretches of cable high above the forest floor. Along the way, guides, who expertly ensure everyone’s safety, point out highlights of the terrain  with jokes peppered throughout their anecdotes at each platform stop.

At Ohio ATV World, ATV riding along the Hocking River and through the woods to an open field pair scenery with adventure. Guides help novice riders learn handling techniques and offer assistance when needed. Expert riders are welcome to tackle the obstacle course.

For a quieter venture, a kayak trip on Lake Logan, Lake Hope or at Strouds Run State Park with Mimi Morrison through Touch the Earth Adventures is a perfect way to bird watch, enjoy the fall colors and settle into the season. Mimi provides the kayaks, the paddles and her keen eye for spotting those details that many might miss. Turtles sunning on a log, the splash of a beaver tail or how to tell one plant from another are just some of the highlights.

Kayaking with Touch the Earth Adventures

My last Hocking Hills adventure included a stay at Cabins by the Caves. My husband, 10-year old son and freshman in college daughter, who were along for this jaunt, enjoyed  the two night stay as much as I did.

The Jackson, a two-bedroom cabin that leans towards high-end rustic, was appointed with everything that a multi-aged family could want. Board games, videos for the VCR, and a hot tub on the porch kept us busy and satisfied when we weren’t out exploring.Because of the welcoming e-mail I received  with perfect directions and tips on where to buy groceries in nearby Logan, we hit Wal-Mart before we headed to find the key in the cabin’s lockbox. Except for one lunch out, we took advantage of  the cheery kitchen for preparing meals.

Cabins by the Caves has a total of six cabins and two lodges that range from two to four bedrooms. Each are tucked back in the woods offering privacy, relaxation and plenty of fall foliage finery.

  1. Now that’s what I am talking about. We’re heading to Ohio next month and I need to find something to entertain the kids. This is looking promising…
