When I was in the Gold Country town of Nevada City last summer doing research for Insight Guides California, there was one place that seemed to be on everyone’s lips.
“That new glamping place.”
“The campground opened by Erin and Dan Thiem, the couple that own the Outside Inn.”
“You should check out the new camping place, it’s supposed to be really cool.”
That place that everyone is buzzing about is the Inn Town Campground.
On a 15-acre site, two miles from downtown Nevada City, the scenic campground offers a few different levels of accommodations—camping, RV sites, and best of all, glamping tents. This is the perfect set-up for people like me—those who prefer comfort and luxury to back pain and dirt. The cozy canvas glamping tents are airy and bright and include electricity, heated mattress pads on comfortable mattresses, fresh linens, side tables, private porches or balconies, and outdoor sitting areas. There are fire circles interspersed between the sites.
A communal building onsite offers plenty of extra amenities including:
- Foosball & Ping Pong tables
- Reading nooks
- Camp store
- Beer, Wine, Ice, Ice Cream, S’mores fixings and more
- BBQ area
- Laundry
- Community Kitchen

Over Thanksgiving, my family visited relatives in Nevada City and we were invited by Erin to spend a night glamping at the Inn Town. It was exceptionally cold, and we were pretty concerned about shivering all night in an unheated canvas tent. But, our fears were quelled when we slipped into the sheets on top of the adjustable heated mattress pad. I still needed gloves to read in bed, but the beds were downright toasty! I can’t wait to go back on a warm summer night…
