I’ve been excited to check out the yurt at Windsong Cottages ever since my friend Tiffanie raved about it three years ago. She and her family have been going there every year since she got married.
I tried to book it for my birthday, two years ago, then again for my anniversary but no dice. This year it happened to be available for two nights during my birthday weekend so I jumped on it.
I’ve slept around in every type of accommodation worldwide from 5-star resorts to sketchy European hostels, but I’d never stayed in a yurt. Hell, I’d never been inside a yurt before!
So, with much enthusiasm, the fam and I headed to West Marin, a few miles beyond Pt. Reyes Station on Route 1, to the Windsong Cottages.
There, set in 40 acres of horse ranches, was the tiny circular abode in which we spent the next three days.
We stationed ourselves there and ventured out to Point Reyes National Seashore to hike and play on the beach. Whenever we come up this way we stop for drinks at Vladimir’s (a Czech institution), have lunch with Dan’s parents at the Station House Café, and mosey in and out of the cute shops. I always make a purchase at “the Saddlery,” one of the ultimate general stores with an equine bent.
My nine-year-old daughter got up early every morning to visit the horses across the dirt road and befriend the stable workers. In the evenings we soaked in the tub and warmed up in front a crackling fire. It was perfectly lovely and chill. The essence of West Marin.
Insider Tip:
If you stay at Windsong, consider forgoing restaurant meals and head to Cowgirl Creamery for award-winning cheeses to bring home and pair with delicious fruits and crackers.

Yurts are amazing – some are very basic and others are quite luxurious. They are definitely growing in popularity.
