If you walk into Hotel Triton San Francisco, you might mistake the lobby for a fine art gallery and the hotel rooms look more like guest rooms in a private home. Rest assured that you will be feeling cozy at Hotel Triton San Francisco and well cared for.
While the 140 room boutique hotel opened in 1913 it has recently completed a $6 million dollar renovation orchestrated by designer Liubasha Rose. Liubasha was striving to create the Danish concept of Hygge, conjuring a feeling of coziness. Similar to the home of a well heeled traveler, she has decorated the lobby and sitting areas with a curated collection of art from New York artist Field Kallop and found objects from Liubasha’s travels.
One of the most unique pieces in the lobby is a “window to the past.” I describe it as Indian Jones meets Mission Dolores. During demolition, an art deco mural was discovered behind the walls of the 1913 property. Created in the 1940’s by impressionist artist Jon Oshanna, “window to the past” depicts Mission Dolores, the oldest building in San Francisco and the oldest intact mission in California. Be sure to check it out when you check into the hotel.
Formerly a Kimpton Hotel, the property is now independently owned and operated as a San Francisco boutique hotel. There are so many one-of-a-kind touches in the hotel that make it different from a cookie cutter hotel property. The art in the rooms is unique and so is the art in the lobby. For example, the Nigerian Royal Yoruba Head Crowns on display by the reception area are gorgeous.
I’m told that a past guest of the hotel, who is originally from Nigeria, has brought several of his Nigerian friends to Hotel Triton specifically to see this unique collection of crowns.
