It's a dog's life at Carmel Beach. Dogs welcome at Hofsas House, Carmel, CA

Pet-friendly Hofsas House, Carmel, California

If you are one of those who enjoy traveling with man’s best friend, you’ve probably heard about or traveled with your dog to Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Hofsas House in Carmel not only offers ocean view rooms at affordable prices, they welcome your four-legged friend in style.

In all of my travels, Carmel is one of the most pet-friendly communities that I have encountered and Hofsas House is the cat’s meow for dogs. With water bowls and pet-friendly restaurants scattered throughout this bohemian village, you’ll feel guilty if you leave your dog at home.

Romantic Hofsas House

My husband and I were married in Carmel, and spent our first night together as husband and wife at the Tickle Pink by the Carmel Highlands and Point Lobos.  This was our first stay at the Hofsas House, the other pink palace. It is a family-friendly property with a swimming pool and sauna. Hofsas House offers concierge service and enhancement packages such as s’mores with all the fixings, and, of course, a dog-friendly package. Did I mention that Carmel Beach is a short walk from the hotel and not only allows dog to run off leash, they are encouraged to romp and roll on the white sands beach.

Complimentary continental breakfast

Your stay at The Hofsas House also includes a continental breakfast. The family-run property likes their guests to come downstairs for breakfast so they can help plan your trip to Carmel.  If I hadn’t opted for their complimentary concierge service, I wouldn’t have learned about Carmel’s Wine Walk by-the-Sea Passport. Of course, you are welcome to bring a tray of fresh fruit, pastries from Monterey’s Paris Bakery, yogurt, juice and a carafe of fresh coffee or hot tea back to your hotel room. Which is exactly what we did, as we didn’t want to miss out on our ocean view room.

"Hofsas House King Suite"

Our ocean view king suite, room #45, included a fireplace with a Duraflame fire log. We enjoyed a local bottle of wine and a couple of wonderful cheeses from the local Cheese Shop. Our room rented for $175 in the slow season, ranging to a high of $229 – a great value compared to other ocean view properties in Carmel.

Hofsas House is a four story building without an elevator. The owners go out of their way to accommodate guests with disabilities and offer ADA rooms, but there are a lot of stairs on property.

Things to See and Do in Santa Monica, California

When in Santa Monica, California, you have to visit Santa Monica Pier

Are you visiting Santa Monica for the first time? Below is a list of “Insider Tips” for things to see and do in SaMo.

When I have a visitor from out of town, I take them to the  Shore Hotel.  The location is within walking distance to all of the Santa Monica attractions (Santa Monica Pier, Third Street Promenade, restaurants, shops, etc).  Not to mention it’s right on Ocean Ave and offers views of the Pacific Ocean. For an added bonus, Shore Hotel has a partnership with Tikkun Spa so anyone who stays at the hotel can use their facilities free of charge.

Don’t miss Santa Monica Pier or Annenberg Community Beach House if you have kids traveling with you.

"Blue Plate Carrot Cake"

Blue Plate offers fresh California cuisine (and Carrot Cake) with laid-back Santa Monica atmosphere.

Where to Eat in Santa Monica

If you are looking for typical Santa Monica cuisine, I recommend Blue Plate on Montana Ave.  This local Santa Monica restaurant offers fresh California cuisine with the typical laid-back Santa Monica atmosphere.

I recommend any of the sandwiches, wraps or salads with the house roasted turkey; Montana Club, Turkey Club Wrap or Cobb Salad.

Looking for cheap food in Santa Monica? Go to Border Grill during happy hour. Fantastic Mexican at a great price.

The V-Lounge is the spot for late night dining.

To spend the big bucks, go to The Lobster at the Santa Monica Pier or Boa Steakhouse on Ocean Ave.

Go to Jinky’s Cafe for a great breakfast treat or coffee. You might even spot Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie eating here with their kids.

Just outside of Santa Monica you can visit Malibu, have lunch at Moonshadows.

"Border Grill Drinks"

Go to Border Grill during happy hour for good Mexican food at great prices

Eco-friendly and athletic Santa Monica

Seeing a lot of green and eco-friendly businesses? Santa Monica is best known for their commitment to the environment.

When you come to Santa Monica, get your picture taken on the beach with the Santa Monica Pier in the background.

The best vantage points are taken by walking to the top of the Santa Monica bluffs

The Shore Hotel offers great views and is the best place to watch or experience the LA Marathon finish line.

Santa Monica from inside out

In Santa Monica, outdoor enthusiasts will want to walk or bike to get around within the city.

Looking for a little exercise? Walk along the beach or Ocean Ave if you don’t want to get sandy!

The Museum of Flying is the newest museum in Santa Monica.

Night life in Santa Monica? For a night of dancing, go to 31Ten. You might also enjoy the Twilight Dance Series on the Pier.

The Santa Monica Mirror or Santa Monica Daily Press will keep you posted on what’s happening in Santa Monica.

If you happen to be visiting Santa Monica in the spring, check out Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo show at the Santa Monica Pier

In the summer you should attend Santa Monica stairs for a good work out.

Did you know that Santa Monica is known for being one of the most progressive beach cities in terms of the green movement?

Shop Santa Monica

Plan a visit to Santa Monica Place Mall in the fall for great sales and back to school shopping.

Come to Santa Monica for Rose Bowl pep rallies. My son and husband got a taste of Santa Monica pep rallies first-hand while attending the University of Oregon Rose Bowl Game. Go Ducks!

The Santa Monica outdoor ice skating rink is worth a spin in the winter.

Insider Tip: Check out the often over-looked Montana Street in Santa Monica.  There are tons of great shopping and restaurants options and it is less crowded than Third Street Promenade.

What are your favorite things to do in Santa Monica?

Things to See and Do in Sausalito, California

"Yachts sail Sausalito on Opening Day 2011"

Boats sail the waters of San Francisco Bay on Opening Day 2011

Welcome to the Neighborhood, A Series About San Francisco Neighborhoods
About the author. Dianne Admire is the co-owner of San Francisco company Carried Away. Carried Away offers private, custom, experiential tours of San Francisco and the Bay Area for up to 4 people. Dianne and her business partner Vikki Garrod (a.k.a. The Ladies of Carried Away) are known for their insider’s knowledge of the Bay Area, especially San Francisco and Marin. To book one of their sights, food, wine, or shopping outings you can contact them at www.CarriedAwaySF.com.
Sausalito
For this installment of the “Welcome to the Neighborhood” series, we’re heading North over the Golden Gate Bridge to one of the Bay Area’s most popular towns – Sausalito. As we pointed out in our post about Mill Valley, the towns of Marin are not technically San Francisco neighborhoods, but we believe the bridge is just a mental barrier that once overcome, opens up another neighborhood – and world –  for visitors and locals alike.

So let’s sally North to Sausalito, shall we?

Beyond the Expected
While we love the grand sights, we love the unexpected, off-the-beaten path destinations even more. It is in those places and moments where travelers have their best, real, personal experiences. It is with that spirit that we share with you some of our favorite places to visit in Sausalito:

Explore Sausalito
The hills and stairways
After you walk along Bridgeway – the main street in town –  to look at the amazing views of San Francisco, turn back towards the little downtown area and look for Excelsior Lane. It’s a stairway that leads off of Bridgeway and heads up into the hills of Sausalito. This is one of many stairways throughout the hills of town (in the past, some of these led to speakeasies and brothels), and all offer a glimpse into the beautiful gardens, homes and vistas that lucky Sausalitians enjoy. Wandering aimlessly is the way to go; mix it up by walking a few flat blocks before ascending another staircase. Wind your way down with a different route and eventually you will end up back on Bridgeway.
Marinas
There are eleven Marinas and yacht clubs in Sausalito and one of our favorites to wander around in is the Sausalito Yacht Harbor. Just off the beaten path, at the northern end of Bridgeway, you can  walk amongst the sailboats, appreciate the views of Mt. Tam, and keep your eyes peeled for sea lions at play.
"Heath Ceramics vases"

Visit Heath Ceramics store in Sausalito, California

Shop Sausalito
Heath Ceramics
Heath Ceramics is having its moment amongst design lovers, even though the company has been producing mid-century style tabletop, homeware, tiles and the like since 1948. The company has recently opened stores in the Ferry Building in San Francisco and also in LA, but nothing beats going to the mothership, where their entire line is available (including factory seconds!). They offer tours of the factory on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We love connecting with the makers and artists of the Bay Area, and this is one of our fave spots in which to do so.
"Fish Restaurant"

Fish is one of the best seafood restaurants in Sausalito

Eat & Drink in Sausalito
Fish
Fish. With all the emphasis on water and boating in Sausalito it makes sense that one of the best fish restaurants in the Bay Area is in this town. It is called quite simply, Fish. Their focus is on serving sustainable fish in a casual atmosphere (order at the counter and they bring it to your picnic table). But don’t let the casual vibe of the place fool you – they serve seriously good food. We love the ceviche, the clam dip and anything they’re grilling fresh that day. Lots of options for kids and non-fishy types too.
"Taste of Rome pizza"

Bring your dog and grab one of the outside tables for pizza at Taste of Rome in Sausalito

Taste of Rome
If you want a super casual (i.e. we’ve seen locals hanging out here in their pajamas!) very Sausalito place to hang out, Taste of Rome is your spot. In the course of an hour, you’ll see a good cross-section of town stop in for very strong coffee, pizzas, desserts and wine. Lots of people bring their dogs and grab one of the outdoor tables to soak up the sun and watch the packs of bicyclists whiz past.
Perfect Sausalito Itinerary
Our perfect itinerary for a day in Sausalito would go in this order: wander around the hills and stairs, pop into Heath before having lunch at Fish, explore the Sausalito Yacht Harbor, which is right next to Taste of Rome where you can end with coffee or wine and one of their delicious desserts. What a lovely way to spend four or five hours!
