Dear Miss Ashton,
I am a Guernsey man and my name is Eben Ramsey. My fathers before me were tombstone-cutters and carvers- lambs a specialty. These are the things I like to do of an evening, but for my livelihood, I fish.
Eben is a member of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and writes to Juliet, along with home-made potion creator Isola, Will Thisbee, baker of the famous potato peel pie and Dawsey Adams who has acquired a book Juliet once owned. A mutual love of books begins a correspondence of letters between Juliet and members of the society. It is through these letters that secrets unfold during the German occupation of Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
As a travel writer, I asked co-author Annie Barrows about the setting of the story. She had recently visited Guernsey and described it as "Mendocino, with its jagged cliffs and rocky shores, yet with a green lushness." When asked if she thought the residents of Guernsey would be prepared for the on-slaught of publicity their small town was about to receive, she laughed and said the librarian and historical society members might have an inkling.
Depending on the book's popularity, perhaps I should consider setting up a tour group to Guernsey? Has anyone been to the Channel Islands?
